A New Way to Eat Squash

Baclayon (Visayas)

I was never a fan of squash, locally known as kalabasa. Not because it’s a vegetable. I actually eat my share of vegetables, mind you. But squash? I just don’t like it, maybe something to do with its bland taste. So when someone asked me if I would want to try a squash-flavored ice cream, you can understand my reluctance.

Still, I am not one to say no to something different. Somehow, I wanted to give this vegetable a chance (although in a different form). So the next thing I knew I was scooping a spoon-full of squash-flavored ice cream into my mouth.

And I was glad I did. It blew me away. I never knew squash, in any form, would taste this good. It tasted a bit like soft peanut butter. The taste is not overpowering but is just enough to make you want to get another scoop (which I did, again and again). Apparently, the ice cream was made from organically grown kalabasa from Bohol Bee Farm. I am not certain what magic Bohol Bee Farm produce has, or if ever that has anything to do with the delectable flavor of the ice cream.

All I know is that I loved my squash-flavored ice cream from Genaro’s Grill and I dare other squash-haters to try it. Come on, you’ll never know how tasty the world is, if you don’t try.
